Life by the Lake  Stories from Siaya and Kisumu

                         By MaryGoretti Odera, Dala Diaries

Where Water Meets Life

When the morning sun rises over Lake Victoria, the world around Siaya and Kisumu awakens with quiet beauty.
The mist floats gently above the water as fishermen push their wooden boats into the lake, singing softly to keep rhythm.
Women prepare fires to boil tea, children laugh on their way to school, and the smell of omena drying in the sun fills the air.

Here, life flows with the lake  calm, strong, and full of hope.

The Fishermen’s Morning

In every village near the shore, fishing is not just work  it is tradition, passed from fathers to sons.
The men return at dawn, their nets heavy with the night’s catch.
They thank God first, saying, “Nyasaye ogwedhi e tich”  “God has blessed our work.”

The women meet them with laughter, ready to clean, sort, and prepare the fish for the market.
To outsiders, it may look like ordinary life, but for us, it’s a song of faith, family, and perseverance.

The Market’s Melody

Later in the day, the market becomes the heart of the community.
In Kisumu’s Kibuye Market or Siaya town center, you’ll find colors and sounds that awaken your soul
bright fabrics, piles of fresh vegetables, smiling faces, and the hum of conversation in Dholuo, Swahili, and English.

Women call out prices cheerfully: “Osuga! Apoth! Omena nyaka ber!”
Everyone knows everyone; news travels faster than the wind.
People share stories, laughter, and sometimes a small prayer before parting ways.

Faith in the Everyday

Faith is alive in every moment here.
It is seen when a mother prays over her child’s porridge before school.
It is heard in the hymns sung during evening fellowship under mango trees.
And it is felt in the way neighbors share food when someone falls ill.

In Siaya and Kisumu, faith is not something kept for Sundays  it’s part of our breath.
We believe that God walks with us by the lake, in the fields, and through every storm.

The Spirit of the People

Despite challenges  poverty, floods, or hardship  our people never lose their spirit.
When there’s joy, we dance; when there’s sorrow, we gather.
A Luo celebration is full of life  the sound of nyatiti and orutu fills the air, and shoulders sway in rhythm to songs of praise and thanksgiving.

We celebrate not just the good days, but also the grace that carries us through the hard ones.

The Beauty of Simple Living

Life by the lake teaches us simplicity.
We may not have much, but what we have is enough  peace, love, and community.
The sunsets here are golden, the air fresh, and the laughter genuine.
Every evening, when the lake glows with soft light, it reminds us of God’s promise of peace and provision.

As the elders say:

“Ngima ber ka in gi chuny maber.”
“Life is good when your heart is good.”

In Closing

Siaya and Kisumu are more than places  they are stories of endurance, love, and faith.
By the lake, we find beauty in hard work, joy in small blessings, and strength in togetherness.
Every wave that touches the shore carries a message of hope:

No matter where life takes you, remember the peace of the Dala  your home, your roots, your faith.
