Welcome to Dala Diaries — My Journey from the Lakeside
Welcome to Dala Diaries!
My name is MaryGoretti Odera, and I come from the peaceful villages of Siaya County, near the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya. Here, life moves gently from the sound of birds at sunrise to the laughter of children fetching water at sunset. Every corner of our dala (home) carries a story worth telling.
Through this blog, I want to share a piece of that beauty with you. Dala Diaries is my way of celebrating Luo culture, traditional food, faith, and everyday life. You’ll find stories of our people, recipes passed down by our mothers, and reflections on how faith keeps us strong through every season.
I grew up surrounded by the smell of omena frying in the kitchen, the songs sung during family gatherings, and the wisdom shared by elders under the shade of mango trees. These memories shaped who I am and I believe they can inspire others too.
Whether you’re Kenyan or from far away, I hope this space gives you a taste of our warm culture and a reminder that every home every dala has something beautiful to share.
So join me on this journey. Let’s celebrate life, love, and the rich traditions that make Kenya shine.
Karibu sana! (You are most welcome.)
With love,
MaryGoretti Odera
