Growing Up in the Village: A Luo Childhood Then vs Now
Growing Up in the Village: A Luo Childhood Then vs Now
(Dala Diaries Feature Story)
There is a special kind of childhood that only the village can give. Growing up in a Luo homestead was not just about living it was about belonging, learning, and becoming part of a community. Today, life has changed. Technology has arrived. Town life has expanded. But the memories of village childhood still live deep in our hearts.
Let me take you back… and also show you how things look today.
Childhood in the Old Luo Village (Then)
Life began early very early. Before sunrise, roosters crowed, cows mooed, and mothers were already awake.
✅ Daily Life Then:
-
Children fetched water from the stream or lake.
-
Girls helped with cooking, sweeping, and minding younger siblings.
-
Boys herded cattle, goats, and sheep.
-
Firewood collection was a daily duty.
-
Baths were taken in rivers or using water in basins under the open sky.
There were no alarms, no phones, no electricity yet life moved with purpose.
Games We Played Then
There were no PlayStations or TV cartoons. Instead, we had:
-
Ajua & Owaro board games
-
Tige (hide & seek)
-
Dabong’ (jumping games)
-
Ball made from banana fibers
-
Running barefoot until sunset
We laughed loudly. We fell and rose again. Childhood was free
Storytelling by the Fireside
Evenings were the most powerful moments. After supper:
-
Grandmothers told folktales
-
We learned about Luanda Magere, Ogonda Ramogi, and brave heroes
-
Elders taught morals through stories, songs, and riddles
This was our first classroom.
Food Then
Meals were simple but rich:
-
Ugali and okra (osuga)
-
Omena and sour milk (mursik)
-
Sweet potatoes, cassava, millet porridge
-
Meat only on special days
Yet, we ate together as a family sharing was natural.
Growing Up Today (Now)
Life has changed fast.
✅ Childhood Today:
-
Children wake up with alarm clocks
-
They go to school by bus or motorcycle
-
They use phones, tablets, and internet
-
They play video games instead of outdoor games
-
Fast food replaces traditional meals
Life is faster… but sometimes lonelier.
What We Gained & What We Lost
✅ Gained:
-
Better education
-
Global connection
-
Technology & opportunities
❌ Lost:
-
Deep storytelling culture
-
Communal parenting
-
Respect for elders is reducing
-
Traditional games disappearing
Final Reflection
Growing up in the Luo village taught us:
-
Hard work
-
Respect
-
Community
-
Humility
-
Resilience
Even as life changes, our roots still matter. The village is not backward it is the foundation of who we are.
